“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
—John 10:27 (NKJV)
Have you ever wondered if God still speaks?
Not in a big, booming voice from the clouds—but in a real, personal, meaningful way? I have. And for a long time, I quietly wrestled with whether I was even supposed to ask Him to speak to me.
But over the years, I’ve discovered something both comforting and powerful:
Our Father wants to speak to His children.
In fact, Jesus died to restore our relationship with our Father. He made a way for us to draw near—into real fellowship with God. And part of that fellowship is communication.
Hearing the voice of God isn’t reserved for the spiritually elite. It’s not a mystical experience or something we need to earn. It’s part of the relationship Jesus has made possible.
If you’ve ever struggled with knowing how to hear God—or questioned whether He wants to speak to you—this post is for you.
Today, I want to share 5 simple but powerful keys that have helped me hear God more clearly in my daily life.
1. Believe That God Wants to Speak to You
This may seem obvious, but I’ve learned it’s a huge stumbling block for many.
Some people have been taught that God doesn’t speak anymore—or that it’s wrong to ask Him to. But that doesn’t align with the God we see in Scripture, or the relationship Jesus invites us into.
Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice.” (John 10:27)
That’s us. His sheep. And He wants us to hear Him.
God’s not trying to hide. He’s not playing spiritual hide-and-seek. He wants you to know His heart. He wants you to recognize when He’s leading you, comforting you, correcting you, and reminding you that you’re His.
So if you’ve been hesitant to ask, let me encourage you: it is not only okay—it is good and right—to expect that your Father wants to speak to you.
2. Spend Time in Prayer
Communication goes both ways. And prayer isn’t just talking—it’s listening, too.
I’ll be honest: this part didn’t come naturally to me. I’m a talker. I’ve gone to God with all my thoughts, emotions, plans, and pleas. But I’ve also learned that sometimes, what my soul needs most is stillness.
Prayer is where we learn the rhythm of communion. It’s where we pour out our hearts, but also where we give space for God to pour into us.
There have been moments when I’ve stopped mid-prayer and simply said, “Lord, what do You think?”—and in the quiet, I sensed a peace or a word that changed everything.
We must draw near to hear. Prayer is the place we begin.
3. Ask God Specific Questions
This is something I used to shy away from, but now I see as a beautiful act of faith.
Asking questions doesn’t mean you’re doubting. It means you’re engaging. It means you’re inviting God into your wrestlings and trusting Him with your heart.
Sometimes I ask Him about a Scripture I don’t understand. Other times, I bring Him a deep pain from my past and simply ask, “Lord, can you show me where You were in this?”
Most of the time, the answers don’t come instantly. But asking invites intimacy. It keeps the conversation going.
And even when the answers don’t come right away, there’s comfort in knowing I’ve placed the question in His hands.
4. Spend Time in His Word
God’s Word is His voice in written form. It’s not the only way He speaks—but it’s always the standard.
The more time I spend in the Word, the more I begin to recognize His voice in other places too. The Scriptures become the vocabulary of heaven—the language my heart learns so I can hear Him more clearly.
And when the Holy Spirit brings a verse to mind at just the right moment, I know—that’s Him.
If you want to hear God more clearly, get to know the way He speaks. And the best way to do that is by spending time in His Word.
5. Listen for His Voice
This one sounds like a repeat, but it’s more than just “hearing”—it’s about tuning in.
Listening is a posture. A mindset. A spiritual attentiveness that says, “Lord, I’m listening—whenever You want to speak.”
Some days that might look like silence in the car instead of filling the space with noise. Other days, it’s walking around your home whispering, “Speak, Lord. Your daughter is listening.”
It’s not always about long, quiet mornings (though those are wonderful, too). Sometimes it’s in the laundry, in the chaos, in the in-between moments of motherhood that we hear Him whisper to our heart—and we know He’s there.
Be Encouraged
Friend, this isn’t a formula. These 5 keys aren’t steps to check off—they’re invitations into deeper relationship.
God doesn’t just want you to serve Him. He wants you to know Him.
He wants your heart.
So if you’ve been longing to hear God more clearly, I encourage you to begin with this simple prayer:
“Father, I believe You want to speak to me. Help me to hear You. Tune my heart to Your voice, and help me to recognize when You are near. Amen.”
Reflection Questions
- Do I believe God wants to speak to me personally?
- How can I make space this week to both talk and listen to God?
- What questions have I been afraid to ask Him? Can I bring one to Him today?
Whether this is all new to you or simply a reminder, I hope you walk away encouraged and more confident in your ability to hear God’s voice.
You are His. And He delights in speaking to His children.
With love and grace,
Audrey
