When God's Answers Seem Delayed

Though Zechariah and Elizabeth had earnestly prayed for years to have children, it seemed as if their prayers were unanswered. And now, in their old age, they had finally given up hope for a child of their own.

But God wasn’t finished yet. One day as Zechariah stood before the altar of i cense in the Temple at Jerusalem, the angel Gabriel stood before him, announcing how God had heard his prayers and soon he and Elizabeth would have a son. Their son would be no average child. He would “go before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah.” (Luke 1:17) But this news seemed too strange for Zechariah. He had so many questions.

But the angel was very clear that God had sent him to Zechariah to tell him his “prayers have been heard.” What prayers?

For sure these were not prayers Zechariah had prayed that morning. These were prayers that had been prayed years before, seemingly unanswered prayers. But now, at the right time, God was answering Zechariah and Elizabeth’s prayers for a son.

God doesn’t lose our prayers, or forget about them. Our prayers are very precious to Him. But His timing is very different from ours.

God was doing something wonderful, amazing and exciting on the earth. And He chose two unlikely candidates to help Him in His work.

God placed His Son in a young family. He found a young couple He knew He could trust. He knew their hearts. He knew they would listen to His voice and obey. Good things happen in families where parents are devoted to God and obey Him.

God asked Mary to believe something humanly impossible and dedicate her life to His plan. This assignment would require her total surrender. Obeying would mean giving up her own plans and desires and submitting to an uncertain future.

Obeying God would also cost her reputation. For her entire life people would point and whisper. She would carry undeserved shame for His glory. And she wasn’t the only one who would bear this burden. Because of her obedience to God her family and Joseph would also have to deal with the ridicule of others. God was asking a lot of Mary...

I often (as in daily) feel like other women do this mama-gig better than I do. I’ve seen their organized and beautifully decorated homes. I’ve watched them execute their Holiday plans with skill and grace. I’ve sat in awe at their ability to work a full-time job and reserve energy for good-night kisses. But rather than let comparison steal my joy and beat myself up for not being more like them, I’ve decided to concentrate on the most important thing, while doing my best to keep up with all the other things. But to do this, I have to know (and remember) what the most important thing is.

Jesus. He is the most important thing.

How do I introduce my children to Jesus? How do I invite Jesus into my home? How do I successfully share my faith with my children? By faith and love. Faith and love lead to faithfulness. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15 NIV)
