There’s something sacred about a table.
Whether it’s a kitchen table surrounded by sticky fingers and sippy cups, or a spiritual table—where truth is shared and hearts are nourished—it is a place of invitation. And as women, we are called to set that table with wisdom.
Proverbs 9 gives us a powerful image:
“Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table.” (Proverbs 9:1-2)
Wisdom isn’t passive. She prepares. She plans. She invites. She sets a table, not just for herself but for others to gather and receive.
This speaks deeply to me as a wife, a mom and a homemaker. In all those roles, I’ve come to see that I’m not just raising children or keeping a home—I’m setting a table that my family and others will feed from. And what I put on that table matters.
The Table of Influence
We often underestimate our influence because we’re so close to our everyday lives. It feels like we’re just trying to get through the day without losing our patience. But the truth is, we’re shaping hearts and forming faith—one ordinary moment at a time.
I see this most clearly in my homeschooling journey.
When I first started homeschooling, I thought I was choosing an educational path. And I was. But I soon realized it was also a discipleship path. God was using the decision to homeschool not just to teach my children—but to teach me. To teach me how to be patient, how to slow down, how to trust Him with the process.
Each day around our table, we opened books and Bibles. We read Scripture, prayed together, and talked about things that matter. But it’s not just what we teach—it’s how we live that teaches most. Our kids pick up on everything: the tone in our voice, how we react when things go wrong, what we value most.
We are always teaching. The question is: what are we teaching?
Passing Down More Than Lessons
The older I get, the more I realize that the greatest legacy we leave isn’t in what we say, but in how we live. Are we passing down wisdom or worry? Faith or fear? A love for God or just a list of rules?
We pass on more than we realize.
We pass on how we handle hard days.
We pass on whether we will trust Jesus or try to fix things on our own.
We pass on what it looks like to be a woman who walks with God—not perfectly, but faithfully.
And it starts at the table.
The conversations we have.
The values we model.
The Scriptures we share, even when we wonder if anyone is listening.
It’s all adding up to something. A life poured out. A legacy of wisdom.
Setting the Table in Every Season
You don’t have to be a homeschooler or a Bible teacher to set a table of wisdom. Wherever you are, whatever season you’re in—you have something to offer. You may feel tired or unsure, but if you belong to Jesus, then His Spirit is at work in you. And He will give you the wisdom you need, not only to walk your path—but to guide others along theirs.
Maybe your table right now is a text thread with a friend who’s struggling.
Maybe it’s your Sunday school class, or your co-workers, or the little ones who call you Mama.
Maybe it’s a quiet corner in your home where you meet with the Lord—and where your life begins to reflect His heart.
Every table is holy ground when it’s offered to God.
And while the world tells us to hustle, climb and compete, wisdom whispers something quieter:
Build slowly. Live faithfully. Pass it on.
A Prayer for Today
Lord,
Thank You for the table of wisdom You’ve set before us—a table filled with grace, truth, and eternal hope. Help me to be faithful with the table You’ve entrusted to me. Whether it’s in my home, in my relationships, or through my work, let my life reflect Your wisdom. Show me how to pass on not just knowledge, but a heart that seeks You. Help me teach not just with words, but with love, faith, and consistency. May the legacy I leave point others to You.
