Has God Even Heard My Prayers?
Luke 1 tells the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, a couple who loved God deeply and lived righteously before Him. Yet, their prayers for a child went unanswered year after year. By the time we meet them in Scripture, they were “well advanced in years.” The waiting had turned into wondering, and the wondering had turned into silence.
God’s Timing Is Never Late
While Zechariah was serving as a priest in the temple an angel appeared beside the altar of incense. The angel said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son” (Luke 1:13).
“Your prayer has been heard.”
Really? After all these years? After so much silence?
The story of Zechariah and Elizabeth reminds us that God is working even when we aren’t aware of it, even when we’ve given up. God had a plan for this couple—and His timing was woven into a much bigger story than they could have imagined. The child they longed for would grow up to be John the Baptist, the one who would prepare the way for the Messiah.
When it feels like God has forgotten you, remember: His “not yet” is often a setup for something greater.
God Works While You Wait
Waiting seasons can feel heavy. We question, we wonder, we wrestle. Yet it’s often in the waiting that God is shaping our hearts for what’s ahead.
Zechariah and Elizabeth’s faith wasn’t wasted in those quiet years. It was being refined.
Sometimes, the waiting is the very place where faith grows roots.
It’s where we learn to trust God’s character more than our timeline.
It’s where we surrender our understanding and say, “Lord, even here, I believe You are good.”
You may not see it now, but God is always working behind the scenes—aligning circumstances, preparing hearts, and weaving together a story far greater than your request alone.
God’s Answer Is Often Better Than Our Ask
Zechariah and Elizabeth asked for a child. God gave them a prophet.
They prayed for a son. God gave them a voice that would prepare the world for Jesus.
God takes our small prayers and turns them into something eternal.
When we entrust our desires to Him, God doesn’t just answer according to what we want—He answers according to what will bring Him glory and bring us deeper joy. That’s why His answers are often different than what we expected… and better than we could have dreamed.
God Remembers You
When Elizabeth became pregnant, she said, “The Lord has done this for me. In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people” (Luke 1:25).
She recognized what God had done. The very thing that once caused her pain became the testimony of His faithfulness.
Maybe your story isn’t unfolding the way you planned. Maybe you’ve let go of dreams that you once held so close. But God remembers your prayers—and He remembers you.
You might have stopped praying, but He never stopped listening.
You might have forgotten those prayers, but He hasn’t.
He is the God who keeps His promises in His perfect time. And when the fulfillment comes, it will not only bless you—it will point others to Him.
When God Answers Differently
Sometimes God’s answer doesn’t look like what we asked for. Maybe the relationship didn’t work out, the job didn’t open up, or the healing didn’t come the way you hoped.
But even in those moments, His faithfulness remains.
Zechariah’s story didn’t end in the temple that day—it continued in the months ahead, in Elizabeth’s rejoicing, in John’s birth, and in Zechariah’s song of praise.
His first words after his long awaited son was born were words of worship: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them” (Luke 1:68).
That’s what happens when God revives forgotten prayers—our hearts remember who He is.
God Is Still Writing Your Story
Maybe your waiting season has been long. Maybe you’ve stopped expecting anything to change.
But the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth is a reminder to your weary heart: God hasn’t forgotten you.
His promises are sure. His timing is perfect. His love is unfailing.
So today, take a deep breath. Let hope rise again.
The same God who remembered Zechariah and Elizabeth remembers you.
And when the time is right, He will answer—not only in His time, but in His way.
And it will be better than you asked.
