The Window of Influence
There’s a precious window of time when God gives mothers a special influence over their children’s hearts — a season when their little souls are open and they look to us for guidance.
When my boys were young, I remember older women telling me, “Enjoy every moment. It goes so fast.” And though that phrase can sound cliché when you’re in the middle of the noise and chaos, I understand it now. That window closes more quickly than we think.
It’s not that we lose influence completely, but it changes. As our children grow, they begin to make their own decisions and face their own consequences. That’s a good thing — it’s how they mature. But it also means we have to learn to let go and trust the seeds we’ve planted.
That’s where faith meets motherhood. We sow truth, wisdom, and love into our children’s hearts — not always knowing when or how those seeds will grow — but trusting that, in time, God will bring forth fruit.
How We Plant Good Seeds
So how do we sow into our children’s lives in a way that lasts?
One of the greatest gifts we can give them is time. Children spell love T-I-M-E. It’s in those everyday moments — having dinner together, talking in the car, praying at bedtime — that we pass on our values and shape their hearts.
When our children know we’re present, that we love them, and that we’ll be there no matter what, their hearts open to receive what we say. They trust our words because they trust our love.
But it’s not just about teaching them right from wrong — it’s about helping them love what is right. That kind of teaching comes from the overflow of a real and growing relationship with Jesus in our own lives.
As God pours into us, we pour into them.
As He fills our hearts with truth, peace, and grace, that same life flows down to our children.
That’s why it’s so important that our faith is real — not just a list of rules, but a living relationship that our children can see changing us.
Stories That Shape the Soul
Stories have always played a big part in our home. When we homeschooled, we read a lot — fables, classics, Bible stories, and fairy tales. Stories have a way of shaping the soul in ways that rules never could.
I remember reading The Boy Who Cried Wolf to my youngest, Caleb, and asking him what he thought the moral of the story was. He looked up and said sweetly, “Come when you’re called, no matter how many times.”
I had to smile. That wasn’t quite the intended lesson, but it reminded me that children see the world in such a pure and beautiful way. And those little moments — reading, talking, laughing — they build wisdom one day at a time.
The goal isn’t to raise perfect children or to do everything right. The goal is to keep planting seeds of faith, hope, and love, and trust God to bring the increase.
When You Don’t See the Fruit Yet
Sometimes it’s hard to see the results of what we’re doing. Motherhood is a lot like farming — you sow, water, and wait. You look at the field and wonder, Is anything even growing?
But just because you can’t see the seed doesn’t mean it’s not there. In time — there’s that word again — time will reveal what was planted in faith.
If we don’t give up, we will reap a harvest of righteousness. (Galatians 6:9)
You, precious mama, are planting today what will bloom tomorrow.
Keep believing in your children, even when they don’t yet believe in themselves.
Keep praying.
Keep sowing good seed.
God sees every hidden act of love and every whispered prayer.
And in time — His time — those seeds will grow into something beautiful.
A Closing Prayer
Father,
Thank You for every mother reading these words today.
You see her heart, her sacrifices, and her quiet faithfulness.
Give her hope when she grows weary, faith when she feels unseen, and fresh joy for the work You’ve called her to do.
May she see the fruit of her faith in her family — in Your perfect time.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
